Širok Sokak, the pedestrian boulevard of cafés and neoclassical façades, is the heart of town, while the ruins of Heraclea Lyncestis on the outskirts – with their Roman theatre and fine mosaics – are among the most important ancient sites in the country. Pelister National Park rises right behind the city.

From Skopje International Airport the drive runs south on the motorway past Veles and Prilep, a direct route that is comfortable in all seasons.
